Korean Air is set to order 33 Airbus A350 aircraft to supplement its long-term fleet operations.


The Seoul, South Korea-based carrier announced it will sign a contract with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus for 33 A350 aircraft. The deal – worth an estimated USD $13.7 billion – will include 27 A350-1000s and 6 A350-900s.


The A350-1000 is the largest variant of the A350 family capable of accommodating 350-410 passengers in a standard three-class configuration. Meanwhile, the shorter A350-900 has a range of 15,370km with a capacity of 300-350 passengers. Korean Air states the -900 can be be deployed on long-haul routes such as Seoul (Incheon)-New york.


According to Korean Air, the order will supplement its long-term fleet operations as it gradually retires its older aircraft. Along with being aligned with its sustainability efforts, the order is also part of preparation for the integration of Asiana Airlines. Asiana currently operates 15 A350-900s.  


Including the agreement to purchase the 33 A350s, Korean Air is awaiting orders and deliveries of over 140 narrowbody and widebody Boeing and Airbus jets. The airline's future aircraft deliveries include 50 A321neos, 10 Boeing 787-9s, 20 787-10s, and 30 737-8s (737 MAX 8).
